3D Material, Form and Object

Marianne Sellmaier graduated from the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in January 2023 with an outstanding Master‘s degree in Industrial Design. The work „Infused Earth“ shows her explorative design practice, through objects and experiments she works on scientific questions with contemporary technology. The academic path was accompanied by many practical experiences. These include participation in the BurgLabs Residency as well as national and international professional experience. Her diverse works are united by the intention to question norms and standards through designed objects. This gives rise to innovative processes and concepts.

  • Infused Earth

For thousands of years, people have been building with earth as a natural material. It can be durable, transformed and at the same time return to the soil without leaving any residue.
In this research project, the material is enhanced by the digital fabrication of 3D printing, giving earth an unprecedented freedom of form. Settings, processes, and properties are explored in numerous experiments. The bioreceptive earth is used in urban spaces. Those printed elements provide a habitat for countless organisms.

Ineinander In the project »ineinander« sophisticated connections complement the rammed earth not only constructively, but also aesthetically. Through these combinations, the application of rammed earth is expanded and invites new, sculptural, and formal variations.
Inspired by traditional joints, the experiments have been about form-fitting earth and wood. I selected and assembled some of the created connections to become an outdoor bench with different functionalities.

Seitenblick
Planned cities are divided into straight asphalt strips and right-angled turns. People are led past each other in straight streams whenever possible. The places where many different people meet are not designed for exchange. Yet it would be an opportunity to meet at eye level. To see the people of the city in their diversity and perhaps even to get to know them.
»Seitenblick« introduces a circular form into everyday life. The structure brings people together subliminally, especially during short stays. The object guides the users‘ behavior in a certain direction. It is mend to bend the everyday straightness, which leads to a constant coexistence, into a togetherness.

VDID-Lab The hybrid symposium Rethinking Products - overcoming obsolescence, organised by the VDIDlab, took place on Saturday, 11.06.2022 from 6 p.m. at the Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle. After the symposium, the participants exchanged ideas on site over refreshing drinks. After a joint breakfast with an initial exchange of ideas on the topic of obsolescence and circular approaches in product design, the Ideation Workshop of the VDIDlab began. In collaborative iterative thought phases, three concepts were developed that are intended to reveal obsolescence and provide impulses for alternative system solutions.

Al otro lago The works of Katarzyna Pacholik bring us in the forest of Bialowieza. She explores different ways of perceiving time. While criticizing time being discontinuous in modern life, she finds eternity in the last primeval forest of Europe. Our paths are crossing in the passion for the factors of time and life being integrated in objects.
Together we designed and built sculptures to be exhibited with her drawings in Spanish museums and galleries.

Hoffnung tragen For »Hoffnung Tragen« I conducted numerous interviews with medical and clinical staff regarding the caretaking of infectious patients. After analyzing the data, it was obvious that there is a need to rethink protective gear and prevent the isolation of patients. Concepts included disinfected safe spaces, to allow human touch even in infectious situations, but also solidproof protection suits for friends and relatives with integrated gloves in warm and soft appearance. Designed to be washed and reused several times. These objects could help not only against loneliness but also encourage healing.

Tischläufer With this object we looked into a possible reality where humans and animals live side by side. Share habits, needs and meals. Ever been disgusted by an ant stitting on your cake? Maybe you should think about sharing. Tischläufer creates an inviting object for dinner, simultaneously enjoyed by humans and ants. The ants are staged to gather the centre of attention. Despite their small appearance they are the focus at this interspecies dinner. Come and have a look.
